Chattooga County, GA 114 forms part of a major highway extending from Summerville
southwest to Centre, AL. Located northwest of Rome, the 13.0 mile long highway
serves the town of Lyerly and the Chattoogaville community. GA 114 also skirted
the city limits of Berryton before the charter of the city was revoked in the
early 1990's. GA 114 is also built along a mostly defunct railroad and runs along
side the Chattooga River. Additionally,
GA 114 shares a breif but significant overlap with GA 100. The overlap extends
a mere 0.6 miles inside the Summerville city limits to U.S. 27, where both routes
end jointly. On the other end, where the highway enters Alabama, the roadway becomes
AL 68, extending through Cherokee County to the county seat of Centre en route
to Gadsden. In all, the highway serves as an alternate highway from Gadsden to
Chattanooga. |
GA
114 was first established in the mid-1930's and was unpaved when commissioned.
By the mid-1940's, the route was paved. In its history, GA 114 had one major relocation.
Older maps show that GA 48 and 114 once overlapped west of Summerville. The route
for this was obviously Lyerly Street (C.R. 96), which angles into GA 114 directly
from GA 48. By 1955, this alignment was shifted further south, correcting GA 114
along a new alignment to end at U.S. 27 instead of GA 48. The
new alignment made it easier for GA 100 to join the highway at the north end.
However, GA 100 was still eight years away from joining GA 114 in Summerville,
when it was extended there in 1963. Otherwise, aside from improvements made over
the years to the highway, no major changes have taken place along GA 114 since
that time. |
