S.R. 120 Alternate follows former S.R. 120 Loop north of former S.R. 120 in Marietta in Cobb County. It rejoins S.R. 120 on each end where S.R. 120 Loop previously intersected the route. It was first approved as a route in 2006 and was signed in late fall 2007. S.R. 120 Alternate is locally known as North Marietta Parkway, following part of former Polk Street between Church Street (Old S.R. 5 southbound) and U.S. 41. S.R. 5 follows a significant portion of S.R. 120 Alternate from where it leaves its overlap with U.S. 41 west to Whitlock Avenue (S.R. 120). At S.R. 120, S.R. 5 continues south to follow the former S.R. 120 Loop to Atlanta Street.
S.R. 120 Alternate along its eastern end has a short limited access portion beginning at Merritt Road and continuing east to Roswell Road (S.R. 120 east and S.R. 3 Connector west). For more information on the history of this highway, reference the S.R. 120 Loop page.
