GA
141, better known by its myriad of local names, is a highway symbolic of the layers
of suburban sprawl extending from Atlanta to south of Cumming. Extending from
famed Peachtree Street in the Buckhead Triangle, GA 141 is known by the various
names of Peachtree Road, Peachtree Parkway, Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and
Medlock Bridge Road. In all, the highway extends through four counties: Fulton,
Dekalb, Gwinnett and Forsyth. Describing
the course of the highway, GA 141 begins as a highly urban roadway before it extends
through older suburbs in Brookhaven, Chamblee and Doraville. After that, the road
changes to full freeway in Norcross before going back to a four-lane arterial
prior to entering North Fulton County. At the Forsyth County line, it finally
squeezes into two lanes on its final course in Forsyth County to GA
9 just beyond GA 400. In essense, the highway
boomerangs back to where it started, just at a point further north. GA
141 also has two banner routes, both known as GA 141 Connector. One of
those routes is actually only a partially signed route designed to provide access
to northbound GA 141 from GA 140 (Jimmy Carter
Boulevard) in Norcross. Since no direct connection exists and traffic must use
parts of the county portions of Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and Holcomb Bridge
Road, GA 141 Connector was designated along the portions that allowed a
return to GA 141 north. The
southern GA 141 Connector is slightly better signed Lenox Road in the Buckhead
community in Atlanta. Connecting Peachtree Road (GA 141) to Piedmont Road (GA
237), the highway exists to provide access to Toll GA
400 since no direct access to GA 400 was possible due to the amount of existing
structures in the area including Lenox Square Mall and a highrise that GA 400
tunnels under before tunneling beneath GA 141. How
this highway came to be as it was is actually
very complicated to describe. Only part of present-day GA 141 is on its original
course, and the need to accomodate the trememdous sprawl shaped this road over
time from a rural highway to a major north-south corridor between Atlanta and
its ever expanding north side. |
