| Located
in Northwest Georgia skirting the base of the Armuchee Ridges, which run east
of the highway, GA 151 extends from Tryon to the Tennessee State Line. In an otherwise
direct course, GA 151 is broken by an 0.8 mile overlap with U.S. 41/76 in Ringgold
and 0.2 miles of the U.S. 41 Truck Route in Ringgold. GA 151 also overlaps for
1.4 miles with GA 136 in the Naomi community.
The entire route passes through Walker and Catoosa Counties for a total of 31.8
miles with 2.4 of those miles overlapped with other routes. In addition, the portion
in Catoosa County south of U.S. 41/76 is also known as Old Alabama Road. GA
151 also has one banner route, GA 151 Spur. GA 151 Spur is located
in Ringgold and functions as part of a truck route for U.S. 41 around a low and
narrow underpass. GA 151 Spur only includes part of the truck route as
the entire loop also includes mainline GA 151. GA 151 Spur is generally
signed only as U.S. 41 Truck Route. However, the end signage is oddly posted. | The
map clip to the left shows GA 151 Spur in greater detail in Ringgold. The map
incorrectly identifies the tressle U.S. 41 between GA 151 and 151 Spur as a bridge
over the railroad when it actually passes under and is height restricted. |

Originally
commissioned in the 1930's, GA 151 was at first completely unpaved. By 1950, the
route was fully paved first in Catoosa County and by 1953 was also paved in Walker
County, completing the route. The
original GA 151 consisted of only the portion north of the present GA
95 intersection. The route south of there was GA 95, which ended into what
had originally been GA 2, later GA
143 and now GA 136. This remained as so until around 1975 when GA 151 was
extended southward to US 27 in Trion, resulting in the truncation of GA 95 at
GA 151 and an overlap with then GA 143. Lastly,
though it is not clear when it was first commissioned, GA 151 Spur first
appeared on the maps in 1964. During the same time, part of GA 151 was also widened
between then under construction I-75 and U.S. 41/76 as part of the then new interstate.
No further changes have occured along the highway since that time. |

end signage in the first photo is the only posted evidence of the highway. In

the truck route continues west on mainline GA 151, GA 151 Spur ends where it aligns
directly into GA 151 north at the intersection here. An at-grade railroad crossing
is to the left of the first photo. The second photo shows the lack of GA 151 Spur
signage at the split and the third photo shows most of the length of the very
short highway. Photos taken May 30, 2005. |
