Long forgotten GA 170 followed what is today part of GA 157 and Durham Road, a county road connecting GA 189 to GA 157. GA 170 was a distinct route in that it formed a loop on top of Lookout Mountain extending north from what is today GA 189 north through Hinkle to return back to GA 189 where GA 157 joins the highway today. The former route of GA 170 totals 9 miles. Most of the route is in Walker County, but both ends are in Dade County in the extreme northwestern corner of the state.
Some highways have significance in one period of time then die out as roads are built around them that result in better routes than the highway offered. This was the case with GA 170. GA 170 was first commissioned in the 1940's as a connector from GA 157 (GA 189 today) to GA 193, which at the time followed what is today Nickajack Road out of High Point and Lula Lake Road in Walker County. Entirely unpaved, GA 170 remained as such for many more years. Around 1950, GA 193 was relocated off of Lookout Mountain into Chattanooga Valley at the base of the plateau, resulting in the turnback of Nickajack Road and an extension of GA 170 along part of the former highway. The extension of GA 170 included a winding connector from Lula Lake Road west back to GA 157, forming a semi-circle that roughly served as an alternate route to GA 157.
GA 170 in 1968. Note the paved road to the south of GA 170 that is now GA 157. By the early 1950's, the Durham Road section of GA 170 was paved, but not the part that includes what is today GA 157. This remained as such for many years longer. In the early 1960's, the portion west of Lula Lake Road in Hinkles was paved, but the remaining section between Durham and Lula Lake Roads was not fully paved until 1968.
Former route of S.R. 170 in 1981. Note the relocated S.R. 157 that assumed most of the former route. A major route shift accompanied by the completion of a paved connection south of Durham Road to existing GA 157 resulted in the eventual demise of GA 170. By 1975, GA 170 was gone. As stated above, GA 157 took over most of the route when the highway was relocated from what is today GA 189. The remaining Durham Road section was turned over to the counties.
