| A
long forgotten route, the former route of GA 175 carves a path through Lowndes
and Lanier Counties southwest of Lakeland. According to the map, the road remains
unpaved to this day as well. In addition, the former highway stretches 12 miles
and followed a course along seven different present-day county roads including
New Bethel Road (Lowndes C.R. 41), Cooper Rd N.E. (Lowndes C.R. 174), Randall
Spells Road, Willie Carter Road , Benny Johnson Road, Shiner Pond Road (all Lanier
C.R. 12) and Upper Grand Bay Road (Lowndes C.R. 658). Not
all of GA 175 is still maintained. Parts in Moody A.F.B. may be closed to traffic
now and the portion of Willie Carter Road just north of the county line is closed
off, though in following the old route the Grand Bay portion is still accessable
along Lloyd Johnson Road (Lanier C.R. 147) and Isaac Road (Lanier C.R. 10), the
latter which joins the road directly. The Lloyd Johnson detour and the short section
of New Bethel Road, by the way, is the only pavement the entire 12 miles. Lloyd
Johnson road is the county road crossing Old GA 175 that is seen on most GDOT
maps. On the map shown below in the history section, it is the blue line. Points
of interest along the route include Banks Lake, carved out of a swamp held up
by a sill that features scenery very similar to the Okeefenokee Swamp to the east.
Also found along the route is part of Moody A.F.B. Originally
commissioned in the 1940's, GA 175 proved to be a very short-lived highway. In
fact, more than half of GA 175 was decommissioned early on with the westermost
part truncated to two miles west of U.S. 221 (originally only GA
31) by 1954 and fully truncated to U.S. 221 by 1956. This westernmost portion
consisted of the portion of the road running south of Banks Lake that included
present day Lanier C.R. 12 (Benny Johnson Road and Shiner Pond Road) and in Lowndes
County, present-day Cooper Road N.E. and a small portion of New Bethel Road.

175 in 1952 and 1964. Note that the route was truncated to U.S. 221 very early
on (1952 and 1964 GHD Maps). | The
rest of GA 175, then more of a north-south highway than an east-west highway,
lasted for another decade. This section was decommissioned in 1969, consisting
of the remainder of Lanier C.R. 12 (Randall Spells and Willie Carter Roads) and
Lowndes C.R. 658 (Upper Grand Bay Road).
