Route Information, History and Termini Gallery

Truly the twistiest state highway in Southwest Georgia, GA 188 makes a big arc over the area north of Thomasville starting in Cairo (pronounced CAY-row) and ending shy of GA 122 in Pavo.  These sharp in the route are largely where the route changes directions at county roads that continue straight. 34.3-mile long GA 188 passes through Grady and Thomas Counties and is locally known as 5th Street in Cairo and Ochlocknee Road in Grady County. The highway also shares a one mile long overlap with GA 202.

History

When GA 188 was first commissioned, the middle portion of the highway was already paved. Indeed, the portion between U.S. 19 and GA 35 already had a hard surface, while the route to the west and east was still unimproved, but maintained. In the early 1950's, only the section west of U.S. 19 in Ochlocknee remained unpaved and by the mid-1950's, the entire highway was paved. Since that time, other than routine maintenance, no further changes have occured along the entire route.
