Route Information, History and Termini Gallery

Located in East Central Georgia, GA 192 forms a loop east of Swainsboro, providing a direct connection from U.S. 1 to Twin City. GA 192 is located entirely in Emanuel County, totalling 31 miles. GA 192 also includes one banner route, 2.1 mile GA 192 Spur, connecting GA 192 to GA 23 0.3 miles north of U.S. 80 in Twin City.

Another interesting feature along GA 192 is that the route nearly joins GA 23, but misses by less than a block. This connection is joined by possibly the shortest highway in Georgia, GA 23 Spur. No evidence has been found that this was ever originally part of GA 192, however.

GA 192 in Twin City barely missing GA 23. GA 23 Spur links the two together (1995 GDOT Emanuel County Map).

History

Before GA 192 came to Twin City, Twin City existed as one town named Graymont-Summit originally formed from two towns of the same name. As the two towns were twin cities, the town eventually became known only by the rather odd name of Twin City. Even though the charters were repealed in 1920, this dual city still shows up on the 1939 Georgia Highway Department map.

By the 1940's GA 192 was fully commissioned through Twin City. With all of the highway fully paved between GA 57 and U.S. 80, the route was moving ahead early on. By the early 1950's, GA 192 was fully paved and established as a major route south of Twin City while the northern portion was already well on its way to being fully paved. The rest was fully paved around a year or two later.

After a period of years, GA 192 was joined in 1960 by its first and only banner route, GA 192 Spur. Since that time, no changes have occured along the highway.
