| Located
in the southwestern corner of the state, GA 200 stretches a lengthy 38.1 miles
between the county seats of Baker and Early Counties. Though this highway is the
only direct link between the Blakely and Newton, it is still one mile longer than
the alternative set or highways along GA 62, 216
and 37. In Damascus, GA 200 shares an 0.2 mile
multiplex with GA 45 that is not included in the
38.1 miles of the route. Originally
commissioned in the 1940's, GA 200 was largely a dirt road. First paved on the
west end coming out of Blakely, the highway took over a decade to be fully paved.
In that time, GA 200 also originally followed a slightly different course from
the route of today. Indeed, the portion of the highway between Damascus and Blakely
followed in part what is today Crossroads Cemetary Road (Early C.R. 35), which
is still unpaved today. This roadway also featured a longer overlap with GA 45
than today, which was nearly two miles long.

The
map to the left shows the former alignment of GA 200 west of Damascus along present-day
Early C.R. 35. Note the two mile overlap with GA 45 (1952 GHD Map). |
By the
early 1950's, GA 200 was relocated to the route of today and C.R. 35 was extended
along the formentioned old routing. A short section out of Newton was also paved
during that time. Progressive paving of the route came slowly for the lengthy
route, taking over a decade to complete since the route was first created. By
1956, paving was completed in Early County, but still incomplete in Baker County
along the portion from the county line east to F.A.S. 1191 (C.R. 119) and from
F.A.S. 1630 (C.R. 124) to Coon Pond Road (C.R. 15). Paving of the route was fully
completed by 1959. No major changes have occured to the route since that time.
