Route Information, History and Termini Gallery

GA 203 west of Jesup makes a big sweeping arc northwest of U.S. 84. Located in the southeastern part of the state and cutting through Pierce, Appling, Bacon and Wayne Counties, the route extends for 47 miles. GA 203 also overlaps with for 0.2 miles with GA 32 east of Alma and for 0.3 miles with GA 121 in Bacon County.

History

The original route of GA 203 was less than half of the route today. Unlike the big arc of today, the highway was a pretty straight route extending from Blackshear to GA 32 east of Alma for 20 miles. In 1982, GA 203 suddenly became much longer when GA 99 was truncated to U.S. 17 in the Eulonia community north of Darien. To explain the other side of this, the original GA 99 included the present route and what is today GA 203 and part of GA 57 tied together by an overlap with what is now U.S. 84 through Jesup and GA 203 took over what was part of that route.

In the evolving route, the original 1940's route was partially paved early on, while the later extension that was then GA 99 was entirely unpaved. By the late 1950's, all of GA 203 was paved and by 1959, all of the present GA 203 along 99 was paved east of GA 15. After 1960, the Old GA 99 section was completely paved. Since the initial paving and the extension in 1982, no further changes have occured along GA 203.
