| Located
in Macon County, Old GA 217 is a hard-packed dirt road situated to the east of
GA 128 and south of GA 127. This old state route is basically a very odd
route with the route crossing back over the same county road that ends into it
further south. Three-mile long GA 217 today is Miona Spring Road (Macon C.R. 257).
Commissioned
in the 1940's and decommissioned in 1969, GA 217 had all appearances of a politically-motivated
road that served no purpose whatsoever. As previously stated, GA 217 was decommissioned
before it ever had a chance to be paved and appears to remain unpaved to this
day. Click here to look at a detailed
map of Old GA 217.

With
my friend's Element parked here, he took a nice close up shot of the rather well-made
street name sign labeling Old GA 217 with a name, Miona Spring Road. This photo
is at the north end at GA 127. Macon County has not upgraded any of their other
signs but street name signs, and most signs on their roads are not in very good
condition. Note that Old GA 217 here is unpaved. | |

Old
GA 217 is yet another lonesome sandy clay road in Middle Georgia here, but the
sunrise makes it feel more welcoming. It should be noted that some places on Old
GA 217 are by far wide enough for a paved two-lane roadway. |

Old
GA 217 makes a split with River Road, veering right before crossing back over
the route a short distance away. This shot was taken looking northbound. |

Somehow
a curve sign has survived decades of total neglect. The style of this curve sign
is actually a late 70's sign, suggesting that Macon County roads were still receiving
state assistance into the 1980's. Judging that a curve sign there was originally
placed there in the 1960's when it was still a state route and then replaced in
the late 1970's, it makes sense. | | Old
GA 217 reaches its end at GA 128 southwest of where it started. The view here
is looking west at newly repaved GA 128. Too bad GA 217 never had that honor. |
