| An
unusual route in the Georgia suburbs of Chattanooga, over 3-mile long GA 218 ran
close to the Tennessee State Line east of Rossville. Though the park may have
opened after the highway was designated, the existance of the highway very much
appears to have been primarily because of the Lake Winnepesaukah Amusement Park
along the route. An old-fashioned amusement park with a wooden rollercoaster,
the park remains a major weekend destination for people in the areas around Chattanooga.
The route is narrow, winding in places and overall substandard, but reconstruction
and widening along the road is planned in the future. Old GA 218 is locally known
as Lakeview Drive and is today mostly Catoosa C.R. 553 and Walker C.R. 844. Only
a small part of the highway is in Walker County. Old GA
218 was commissioned in the 1940's and fully paved by around 1950. On August 15,
1986, GA 218 was fully decommissioned. This was the same date that the Battlefield
Parkway extension (GA 2) opened. Since GA 218 was
not replaced by GA 2, the route was decommissioned as part of a mileage swap.

GA
218 a few months prior to when it was decommissioned. Note GA 731, which is now
GA 2. Also note Old GA 2 and GA 349, both also decommissioned on the same date
(1986 GDOT Map). |
