246 exists as the Peach State's answer to NC 106. Located in the extreme northeastern
corner of the state, the highway begins north of Dillard just shy of the state
line and travels east before turning north into North Carolina.
| In
a very unusual agreement, part of GA 246 is actually located in North Carolina.
Indeed, that section is maintained by GDOT as well. The reason for this is that
a small section of the highway breifly enters North Carolina and reenters at Stecoah
Falls. On this small section, there are no prominent markers indicating the line,
though there are small stone markers with "NC" and "GA" on
each side of them where the road leaves and reenters the state. A short ways east,
the highway continues back into NC, but that part is the beginning of NC 106.
It is believed but not confirmed that this mileage is compensated by a short stretch
of county road over in Union County maintained as a NC state secondary road. Short
GA 246 features some spectacular scenery along its route, including a high cascading
waterfall visible from the highway known as Estatoah Falls. The falls begin their
plunge right next to the highway with a pulloff and overlook. The route also enters
the city limits of Sky Valley, the highest city in Georgia. Though the City Hall
is on the portion in Georgia, to actually get to Sky Valley, one must enter North
Carolina and turn back along a secondary state road to reenter the town/development
on the Georgia side. Lastly, GA 246 is located in Rabun County and is approximately
3 miles long on the western segment and 2 miles long on the eastern segment. |

was first commissioned sometime between 1947 and 1949. The road appears to have
existed before that time, likely originally built by the CCC. The road was upgraded
in the 1960's and early 1970's, including passing lanes on the stretch near Sky
Valley and a wider bridge over Wolf Fork Little Tennessee River.
