Route Information, History and Termini Gallery

Connecting the historic town of Clermont to GA 115, GA 254 is a scenic cutoff located in White and Hall Counties. The 11-mile long highway is also known as Mossy Creek Road and Old Cleveland Highway. Mossy Grove Campground, a historic Methodist camp, is located near the highway.

History

GA 254 was first added to the system in the late 1940's and was entirely in White County. The original highway was entirely unpaved and only consisted of the 8-mile portion from what is today Old GA 75 (White C.R. 251) to GA 115. By 1953, a modern highway bridge was completed over Mossy Creek and the road fully paved.

By the early 1960's, GA 254 was extended when U.S. 129 was relocated between Cleveland and GA 284 south of Clermont. When this occured, GA 254 took over part of Old U.S. 129 from the western end south to GA 284. GA 284 took over all of Old U.S. 129 south of 254 and GA 75, since truncated back to Cleveland in 1989, was extended along the portion north of 254. The extension added 3 additional miles to the highway and also resulted in the road ending in Hall County in Clermont.

Compare the two maps before and after the extension of GA 254 south to Clermont along Old U.S. 129. Note GA 75 extended south and GA 284 extended north along Old U.S. 129 on both ends of the extended route (1959 and 1963 GHD Maps).

The last event to occur on GA 254 was the realignment of the intersection with GA 384 (Duncan Bridge Road) in 1993. The relocation eliminated the sharp angle intersection where the two routes cross. No changes have occured along GA 254 since that time.
