GA 260, locally known as Glenwood Avenue, is a 1.2 mile long route located in the Atlanta City Limits in DeKalb County. The highway extends south of I-20 from I-20 west to Moreland Avenue (U.S. 23/GA 42). The route of today is only 15 percent of its original length, which originally extended east through DeKalb County to Covington Highway (U.S. 278/GA 12). The portion that remains is only that which was in the city limits of Atlanta.
Connecting East Atlanta to the inner suburbs near Decatur including the Candler McAfee and Glen Haven communities, this road largely stands today as a reminder to the early progress of metro Atlanta. Much like other similar areas across the country, this area consists of post-World War II neighborhoods, which have undergone numerous changes both physically and demographically over the years, including redevelopment as was the case with the East Lake Country Club and Golf Course.
GA 260 at its full length (2001 GDOT Map). Prior to the major truncation of the route in late 2005, what was GA 260 was located entirely in DeKalb County with its western end at the Fulton-DeKalb County line along Moreland Avenue (U.S. 23/GA 42) extending east along Glenwood Avenue and Glenwood Road to U.S. 278. The entire former route extended 7.8 miles, forming nearly a bee line east to west. GA 260 included interchanges with both I-20 near at its current eastern end and at I-285 near its former eastern end.
What is left today of GA 260 (2006 GDOT Map). GA 260 was established in the late 1940's. Other than the 2005 truncation, construction of the interchange with I-20 around 1960 and I-285 in the mid-1960's, no major changes have been made to the route since its was established.
