Route Information, History and Historic Termini Gallery

The first of the two Quitman County spurs, Old GA 290 extends from U.S. 82 south to the now unincorporated town of Morris. Starting at U.S. 82 halfway between Georgetown and Cuthbert, the highway extended approximately 2 miles before ending at the intersection of Upper Morris Road/C.R. 41 a short ways from where the roadway crosses the railroad tracks in the town. The road continues south as a paved county road into Clay County.

History

GA 290 was first established in 1951 when the part of Morris Road/C.R. 86 became a state route. The highway was originally unpaved, but was fully paved by 1953. The highway extended to Morris, which had no active government until the town lost its charter in the early 1990's through an act under then Governor Zell Miller. This rural spur lasted until 1981.

This 1981 map shows the two Quitman County spurs, GA 290 and GA 291, and their proximity to Cuthbert and Georgetown, as well as larger Eufaula, AL.
