GA 293 Connector

Back to Main Page

Extending a mere 0.4 miles, S.R. 293 Connector connects S.R. 293 to U.S. 41 just south of Cassville. It is located in Bartow County and is part of the Old Dixie Highway, designated later as U.S. 41. Locally, it is part of Cassville Road.

HISTORY

In 1953, what is today S.R. 293 Connector was an original part of U.S. 41 that was utilized as a connector between the old and new routes when the Cartersville By-Pass was first completed. When the Cartersville By-Pass was fully completed, the northern end became part of U.S. 41 Business from 1957-1966 (1). In addition, U.S. 411 and S.R. 20 were moved to the route from 1955-1962 resulting in a quadruplex. However, in 1962, U.S. 411 was moved to a new alignment with S.R. 344 reducing the routes to three. From 1966-1970, the routes were then reduced to two when U.S. 41 Business was decommissioned leaving S.R. 3 and S.R. 20. In 1970, S.R. 293 took over all of S.R. 3 through Cartersville with nothing but S.R. 20 remaining along the connector.

While this road had been numerous routes from the 1950's-1970's, it was finally settled to become S.R. 293 Connector in 1977. This designation came as a result of the relocation of S.R. 20 to the newer U.S. 411 and the extension of S.R. 293. With no other designation, the result was that this stretch of Old U.S. 41 received a new designation to connect U.S. 41 to S.R. 293 that has lasted over 30 years.
