Route Information and History

When driving I-75 just south of Downtown Atlanta, there is not much time for thought when rushing at top speed through 14 lanes of traffic on I-75/85, but a little stretch through there was once known as the South Expressway, designated in part as GA 295. The part of I-75/85 that was originally GA 295 consists of the route from Lakewood Avenue to University Avenue. It is possible that all of the South Expressway was GA 295, but since the route was U.S. 19/41/GA 3 south of that exit, it appears to only be that small section.

History

GA 295 first appeared on the map in 1954 along the mentioned section of the South Expressway, today I-75/85. Previously, the route was maintained by the City of Atlanta. By the time the new freeway was opened up to Georgia Avenue by 1957, short-lived GA 295 disappeared from the map. It is assumed that GA 295 died because the Georgia Highway Department recognized this would be part of I-75 (the Interstate act was in 1956). All of this became I-75/GA 401 by 1959.
