Route Information, History and Termini Gallery

Exclusive to Decatur County, 27.0 mile GA 309 exists in two sections joined by a 4.9 mile overlap along GA 97. The 14.7 mile south section extends from GA 97 in Bainbridge to the Florida State Line and is locally known as Fowlstown Road. The 7.4 mile north section extends from GA 97 to GA 262 and is known as Old Pelham Road. The south section forms a more direct route from Bainbridge to Havana, FL and Tallahassee beyond via Gadsden County Hwy. 159. The north section extends basically to nowhere.

A couple other significant notes on GA 309 regard its connections with other routes. GA 97/309 both have an interchange with U.S. 27/84 along the Bainbridge Expressway in the city. Additionally, GA 309 shares mileage with parts of U.S. 27 Business, U.S. 84 Business, GA 1 Business and GA 38 Business in Bainbridge.

History
GA 309 became a state route in 1959. Most was paved upon commissioning, but part north of Bainbridge was not. On the north section, pavement extended from GA 97 to Open Pond Road (C.R. 55). East of there, the road turned dirt, suggesting that GA 309 there was part of Open Pond Road and paved prior to state takeover. However, the section was paved the following year. Other than that, GA 309 has remain largely unchanged since that time.
