Route Information, History and Photo Gallery

To those familiar with Brookhaven Circle today, it has been quite awhile since the highway was adorned with state route signs. Regardless, quite a few relics remain on the route including some that suggest a large role by GDOT in the county. Old GA 336 changes direction many times with intersections in sharp turns, suggesting that the highway was actually several county roads fused together and realigned so that state highway traffic did not have to stop.

GA 336, now C.R. 538, extends 10.6 miles in Stephens County east of Toccoa in the northeast corner of the state. The north end of the route is at GA 17 Alt within the Toccoa City Limits while the south end is at GA 328 just east of GA 17 in Avalon. The highway itself runs near Lake Hartwell, crossing part of it where the lake backs up on Eastanollee Creek. The South Carolina border is within 5 miles of the former route.

History

GA 336 was first commissioned in 1961 and decommissioned on November 29, 1982. The highway was originally paved upon commissioning and saw no changes during its existance. The 1981 map below shows the former state route:

On Old GA 336 eastbound, this peculiar LWS comes up approaching Tower Road. Tower Road is not a major road at all, but the road makes a shortcut back to GA 17. The use of such signs on county roads suggests that GDOT had a greater roll in Stephens County in the late 70's. This sign dates to when the road was a state route aside from the post, which was recently replaced.
Looking across from Tower Road (in the left of the first picture) is this faded sign. This sign represents the oldest style of such signs used in Georgia.
This sign is found at the south end of Old GA 336 at GA 328. There is no signage remaining on the north end, but this very faded sign is still found on the south end.
This curve sign represents what typically happens when state routes are turned to the county. Both signs here date to 1982 and have long outlived their service life.
