GA 339 is one of the more peculiar highways in the mountain areas. Situated in
Towns County in the Brasstown Valley near Young Harris, its main peculiarity is
that the public apparently is not aware that the road is even a state route. Locally
known as Crooked Creek Road, but not actually signed, this short highway extends
3.4 miles from GA 17/515 to the Anderson Mill Community, all within a mile of
the North Carolina State Line. The road is aptly named, because it is indeed crooked
with continuous sharp curves and turns along its length. Destination signs lead
you to Warne, NC, a small community across the line that requires a turn on part
of GA 66 to get to. In all, it is one of several anomalies in the state highway
system that curiously remains state maintained. GA 339
first became part of the state highway system in 1961. Fully paved upon commissioning,
the highway has seen no changes since it was first commissioned aside from shoulder
widening.
