In
Fall 2003, GA 346 was decommissioned as a state route. The first time this change
was noticed was in October, and the exact date of the decommissioning is not known.
Since the route was not a major route, the decommissioning appears to have come
as a result of a direct mileage swap to add sufficient miles for US 129 Business
in Jefferson when the Jefferson By-Pass opened.
| The
map on the right here shows GA 346 in its final days. Note the proposed relocation
of U.S. 129. Another portion to the south bypassing Jefferson to the west would
ultimately result in the decommissioning of the highway soon after when the mileage
was exchanged for a business route in Jefferson (2000 GDOT Map). |

Back when
the route was first commissioned as a paved highway in 1962, GA 346 served a strange
purpose. Basically, it helped make a state-maintained outlet for then discontinuous
GA 82 Spur (now mainline GA 82). At the time, GA 82, with the "Spur"
banner, continued two miles north of SR 346 into the Holly Springs community,
continuing from there as a Jackson County road. This meant that GA 346 could have
just as easily extended to the present GA 82/GA 82 Connector intersection as it
should today. Regardless, GA 82 remains there while GA 346 is history. Later,
when GA 82 Spur was extended north to GA 323, GA 82 and its spur switched places
with GA 82 Spur relocated to Maysville. Nevertheless, GA 346 remained for over
30 years longer.

This
map shows GA 346 when it served to finish out the route of GA 82 Spur, now mainline
GA 82 (1964 GHD Map). | Aside
from a bridge widening done in the mid-1970's, no major projects have occured
during the years it was a state route. The highway still has some original signage
in place aside from route shields, but is fully county-maintained. |
