This
highway was one which came together rather strangely with an interesting route
at that. It was essentially the piecing together of county roads with GA
1 Spur and an old alignment of GA 103. Basically,
in 1963, part of GA 103, which originally extended to the town of Buena Vista,
was closed through Fort Benning. With that mileage lost, a compromise was made
that created three new state routes: GA 352, 355
and 357. On the east end, in addition to new routes
GA 352 and 355, GA 137 and 137 Spur were
commissioned over part of former GA 103 as well as part of Old GA
26, which was relocated. On the west end, GA 357 was created, taking over
part of Old GA 103 along with previoiusly county-maintained Schatulga, Flat Rock
and Brennan Roads. Schatulga Road followed the western boundary of Ft. Benning,
thus making the part of GA 103 west of the base that was continuous a connecting
route. The Old GA 103 part of GA 357 is today known as Buena Vista Road, extending
from Brennan Road east to the boundary of Ft. Benning. | | Note

Schatulga Road and Flat Rock Road were already labeled as county roads in the
first map. |
By
1969, GA 357 was extended to its full length when the highway was extended over
GA 1 Spur. Previously, the route ended at Victory Drive (U.S. 27/280/GA
1/520). GA 357 had also taken over another
part of GA 1 Spur between Victory Drive and Cusseta Road when first commissioned.
However, at the end compromises were not enough to keep a route that in reality
was not a logical highway. As a result, GA 357 was decommissioned in 1982. | GA

as GA 1 there is now I-185. Note GA 357 extending on what had been GA 1 Spur down
into Fort Benning. |
