Few
highways have the amount of turns, directional changes and name changes that GA
361 did, and following the former route is extremely difficult, especially since
very little physical evidence remains of the route. Perhaps the reason this 21-mile
long route existed was to attempt to tie together all these roads with one number.
Other than that, this Bibb County highway is pointless, mostly accomplishing the
same purpose I-475 does, but without the restrictions of limited access. When
it existed, GA 361 had one overlap, a short 0.1 mile section shared with also-decommissioned
GA 22 Connector (Columbus Road, Old U.S. 80), but this intersection has
since been realigned. GA 361 in all extended from GA
87 (U.S. 23) north of Macon to GA 247 (U.S.
41/129/GA 11/GA 49)
south of Macon. The
area around Old GA 361 is suburbanizing heavily, and tends to be the wealthier
side of the city. As a result, a fair amount of congestion can be found along
most of the route. Old GA 361 has interchanges with I-75 both north and south
of Macon, but does not connect to I-475 even though it crosses it along the Tucker
Road portion. The long list of roads that GA 361 traced are as follows: Allen
Road, Houston Road (Old GA 11), Hartley Bridge Road, Mt. Pleasant Church Road,
Fulton Mill Road, Columbus Road (see above), Heath Road, Tucker Road, Foster Road
and Bass Road. Old GA 361 also intersects numerous highways, including three decommissioned
highways. |
