Route Information, History, Photo and Termini Gallery

Extending from Griffin to Greenville, GA 362 forms a two-part highway between the two county seats. Located about 40 miles south of Atlanta, the highway passes through Meriwether, Pike and Spalding Counties. The road also provides a state highway to the town of Williamson in Pike County. The 30 mile route is actually a collection of local roads. In Meriwether County, the route is known as Callaway Road from GA 41/U.S. 27 Alternate to GA 74/85 and Griffin Highway from GA 74/85 east to the Pike County line. In Spalding County, the route is known as Williamson Road. However, GA 362 is unnamed in Pike County. In addition, the eastern end is at the interchange of U.S. 19/41 with the road.

GA 362 also has a 1.0 mile overlap with GA 74/85 in Alvaton. Also, halfway on the route, the highway crosses the Flint River.

History

GA 362 was first established in 1964, including only the 11-mile long Callaway Road portion from Greenville to Alvaton. At the time, the highway was exclusive to Meriwether County. In 1968, the rest of the highway was established east of GA 85 into Griffin. While most of the highway had long existed on the county road system, the section between Kings Bridge Road in Hollonville and GA 85 in Alvaton appears to have been built later expressly to accomodate the route. This missing link appears to have been completed in 1967 and added to the state highway system a year later, creating a faster and more direct route from Meriwether County to Griffin.

In 1985, GA 362 was slightly shortened when the highway was truncated to end at U.S. 19/41 instead of its original terminus at GA 16 in downtown Griffin. The truncation is on what is known as Whitfield Avenue, and passes through a seedy side of town, which likely affected that decision.
