SCENES PERTAINING TO I-985
On northbound I-85 are several signs warning of the split of I-85 and I-985. This is the last one at the exit. Note that S.R. 365 is completely absent from the sign. S.R. 365 is secret along all of I-985 in addition to S.R. 419. Photo taken June 5, 2005.

S.R. 13 crosses I-985 twice, and originally did three times. This is the first crossing south of Oakwood. S.R. 13 here switches from west of I-985 to east northbound. Photo taken January 28, 2006.
The Plainview Road overpass soon follows. Note the vintage late 1960's design. The sign for approaching S.R. 53 (Mundy Mill Road) is on the right side. Photo taken January 28, 2006.
Here is the final sign for S.R. 53. S.R. 53 here by-passes Gainesville to the west and also goes east to Winder. Photo taken January 28, 2006.
The underpass here for S.R. 53 features late 1960's vintage rails. This has all been changed, however, due to an interchange overhaul that began after this photo was taken. Photo taken January 28, 2006.

S.R. 13 crosses back to the west just north of S.R. 53. This bridge has since been demolished to create a new interchange with I-985, providing another direct route to Gainesville. I-985 was built with few interchanges. Photo taken January 28, 2006. |
The next interchange is S.R. 60, also the eastern terminus of S.R. 53 Connector. S.R. 53 Connector was relocated to this route in the late 1990's. This was also the original southern terminus of S.R. 365 Business prior to the completion of I-985. Photo taken January 28, 2006. |
A couple places on I-985 feature these wide forested medians. This one is south of U.S. 129. Photo taken December 27, 2004. |
U.S. 129 exits here with advance signage for S.R. 369, originally S.R. 13 and the end of S.R. 365. Note that the sign reads "TO" U.S. 129 and NORTH 369. This was reversed when U.S. 129 was relocated to part of I-985 in a very poor resigning. Photo taken December 27, 2004. |
The U.S. 129 overpass consists of twin bridges. Twin bridges like this at interchanges are rare these days. Photo taken December 27, 2004. |
Old Cornelia Highway crosses here, originally the last overpass of S.R. 13. S.R. 13 traffic had to reach I-985 at the next and final interchange for years. Photo taken December 27, 2004. |
The final big guide sign for I-985 has been clearly tampered with, making it no less confusing. S.R. 369 still ends at I-985, which makes this strange enough. Photo taken January 28, 2006. |
SCENES PERTAINING TO S.R. 365 NORTH OF I-985
S.R. 283 east of Clermont has this trailblazer for S.R. 365 mounted at a turn in the route about six miles from the highway. Traffic must actually follow S.R. 52 a quarter of a mile away to reach it. Photo taken May 1, 2005. |
On the S.R. 52 portion of Old Cornelia Highway is this sign directing traffic to S.R. 365 in all-text fashion. S.R. 52 turns left here with S.R. 365 only a mile away. Photo taken May 1, 2005. |
Signs like this never previously existed on S.R. 365 between Cornelia and Gainesville, but apparently S.R. 384 is being given the interchange treatment despite being a signalized at-grade intersection. Not surprisingly, S.R. 384 is being marketed as a developmental highway. Photo taken May 3, 2005. |
S.R. 365 was re-signed mostly in 2005, resulting in these somewhat peculiar contractor-installed route signs. All of S.R. 365 is overlapped with other routes in typical Georgia fashion. Photo taken May 3, 2005. |
The first interchange in Cornelia is Level Grove Road, otherwise known as S.R. 15 Connector. This short highway extends less than a mile to U.S. 441 providing access that the partial interchange to the north at U.S. 441 does not provide. Photo taken May 3, 2005. |
North of the U.S. 441 interchange (facing south), this sleek overpass is for Old Cleveland Road. Note the merge of U.S. 441 northbound into S.R. 365. The northbound concrete lanes here were originally a two-lane. Photo taken August 14, 2004. |
The sign here has since been replaced, but this highlights the confusing mess in Cornelia. S.R. 105 overlaps part of U.S. 441 Business, S.R. 385 is the state overlap of U.S. 441 Business. The "Historic" status is unique to this route. Photo taken August 14, 2004.
North of the U.S. 441 interchange is this sign indicating the quadruplex of four routes, which continues this way up to U.S. 123. This would be greatly simplified by removing the unneccessary S.R. 15 overlap. Photo taken August 14, 2004. |
Further north is the grade separated intersection with S.R. 197. S.R. 197 is joined by a connector road in lieu of a crossroad. This partially button copy sign was installed in 1989 and initially served as a temporary end to U.S. 441 and S.R. 365. Photo taken August 7, 2004.
This directional assembly is mounted on southbound S.R. 197 just past the overpass for S.R. 365 for the connector road. The road ahead is county-maintained Old S.R. 197. Photo taken August 14, 2004.
The big split of the highways north of S.R. 197 shows S.R. 365 jumping over to U.S. 123, which begins at the interchange. Note S.R. 17, formerly S.R. 115, which actually intersects just to the north of it. Photo taken August 14, 2004.
The next sign is pretty clear which routes go where, but six routes must be hard for many people to understand. Photo taken August 14, 2004.
U.S. 123 southbound ends here at the end of the ramp while S.R. 365 continues southwest to Atlanta. Photo taken August 14, 2004. |
Northbound U.S. 123 shown overlapping with S.R. 17 and S.R. 365 en route to Toccoa. This is the first northbound reassurance shield for U.S. 123. Photo taken August 14, 2004. |
Further east in Toccoa, S.R. 365 is on its only two-lane alignment through the city. Here, five routes come together with S.R. 106 not shown. S.R. 184 follows S.R. 365 behind this sign to Boydville. Photo taken August 28, 2004. |
Looking back west is this assembly, which will disappear when S.R. 365 is relocated to the proposed Toccoa By-Pass in the future. Photo taken August 28, 2004. |
This is the first westbound reassurance shield for S.R. 365 entering Georgia from South Carolina. Photo taken August 28, 2004. |
This bridge over the Tugaloo River divides Georgia and South Carolina. It was built by South Carolina. Photo taken August 28, 2004. |
Entering the state you see a combined state line/county line sign and the usual blue welcome sign behind it. Photo taken August 28, 2004. |
Here is the South Carolina state liine sing, which looks a bit better than Georgia's, but also a bit faded. This is also the end of S.R. 365, but U.S. 123 continues east to Greenville. |
