Route Information, History and Termini Gallery

One of the shortest two-digit mainline highways, GA 48 is located in the northwestern plateau in Chattooga County. The entire route is only 12 miles long, extending from Summerville west up onto Lookout Mountain in the Cloudland community before entering Alabama. Because the highway is situated in hilly country and plateau, GA 48 is near many outdoor recreational opportunities in both Georgia and Alabama.

It should be noted that GA 48 will likely gain mileage in the near future when U.S. 27 is relocated on a by-pass east of Summerville. The by-pass will result in an extension of GA 48 eastward, which will make GA 48 as much as five miles longer.

History

GA 48 was one of the original state routes, designated in 1921. The route was paved in the 1920's and with the exception of passing lanes and a bridge widening over Raccoon Creek in the 1980's, GA 48 otherwise has changed little since it was first commissioned.
