Multiple galleries are included below attempting to cover the entire length of the route. Galleries include Sandy Springs/Roswell, Forsyth/Dawson Counties, Dahlonega Vicinity and the termini gallery. All photos below taken by webmaster.
SANDY SPRINGS/ROSWELL

S.R. 9 (with U.S. 19) splits away from Peachtree St in Buckhead in Atlanta. S.R. 141 to the left here becomes Peachtree Rd, later rejoining S.R. 9 in Forsyth County. Historically, the sign to the right would read " 13W". Photo taken April 15, 2005.
Looking back the other way is much upscale urban splendor in Buckhead as S.R. 141 gives way to S.R. 9 and U.S. 19 and S.R. 9 becomes Peachtree St. This scene has changed even more since the photo was taken on April 15, 2005. |
S.R. 9 (Roswell Rd) northbound approaching the Chattahoochee River. The eastbound lanes were constructed in 1928 with the westbound lanes sandwiched onto the bridge in 1965. |
Just past the Chattahoochee River bridge, GA 9 narrows to three reversable lanes. This arrangement extends to S.R. 120 (Marietta St), and it is the only portion of the highway not four lanes between Atlanta and Alpharetta.
Approaching S.R. 120, the reversable lanes end and S.R. 120 joins the route up to Alpharetta. This is also the downtown business district of Roswell.
S.R. 9 and S.R. 120 overhead signage. This is the new VIP diamond grade signage replacing older overheads. Note that S.R. 9 is now a four-lane undivided highway.
S.R. 9 and 120 here are approaching Canton St, which is the original eastern terminus of S.R. 140. S.R. 140 was moved from here in 1977. Note the goofy overhead signal sign and the red "NO" sign, which is distinct to Georgia.
S.R. 9 and 120 fork to the right here at Canton St. GDOT has fought Roswell for years over widening this stretch of roadway. |
S.R. 92 ends into S.R. 9/120 and S.R. 140 in Roswell. S.R. 92 historically did not extend this far, and this intersection also marked the historic western terminus of S.R. 9 Connector. Roswell Mall is on the far left, but not visible here. Photo taken May 22, 2005. |
S.R. 9 southbound and S.R. 120 westbound at S.R. 92 and 140. S.R. 140 overlaps the portion behind the photo making a wrong-way overlap of S.R. 120 and S.R. 140. Photo taken May 22, 2005. |
FORSYTH/DAWSON COUNTIES
Northbound S.R. 9 at S.R. 371 (Post Rd) southwest of Cumming. S.R. 371 is a historic alignment of S.R. 141, which overlapped S.R. 9 on the road straight ahead of this photo. Photo taken June 5, 2005.
Looking back southbound on S.R. 9 at S.R. 371. Note the old-style signage here, very little of which remains on either highway. Photo taken July 23, 2004.
S.R. 141 is basically an alternate route of S.R. 9, and it rejoins near Cumming after parting the route in Atlanta. The road straight ahead was never part of S.R. 141: it turned left onto S.R. 9 to present-day S.R. 371. Photo taken December 31, 2004.
The northern end of S.R. 141 at S.R. 9 succumbed to tremendous suburbanization starting in the 1990's, as noted in this photo. Photo taken December 31, 2004. |
In Cumming, S.R. 9 and 306 overlap between Sawnee Drive and Keith Bridge Rd, both sections of S.R. 306. Here, S.R. 306 is turning west onto Sawnee Drive from its overlap with S.R. 9. Photo taken July 24, 2004. |
This atrocious assembly greets travelers of GA 9 northbound at GA 369. If I didn't know where I was going, I would be pretty confused. This and the next two photos taken January 28, 2006. |
If the last photo wasn't bad enough for you, just behind it is GDOT attempting to fit the word "Dawsonville" into a 36" x 36" blank. Only in Georgia! |
Up close and personal with this old-style assembly on GA 369 eastbound. Actually, there was no practical way to photograph it further off. |
DAHLONEGA VICINITY
All photos below taken September 3, 2007
S.R. 9 and 52 overheads approaching S.R. 9 Business in Dahlonega. More photos of S.R. 9 in Dahlonega can be found on the S.R. 9 Business page.
This is looking southbound at S.R. 9 and 52 just south of S.R. 60. S.R. 9 and 52, shown on the overheads, are by-passing Dahlonega to the south on the by-pass constructed in 1993.
S.R. 9 and 52 by-pass in Dahlonega looking from S.R. 60 southbound. This is a very hilly area.
East of Dahlonega is a quadruplex of U.S. 19 with S.R. 9, 52 and 60 just south of S.R. 9/52 Business. All of these routes also exist in the downtown area with business banners, though the overlap is much shorter. |
North of Dahlonega, S.R. 9 overlaps with U.S. 19 and S.R. 60 up to Stonepile Gap where S.R. 60 splits to Suches. S.R. 9 then follows U.S. 19 to Turners Corner where it ends at S.R. 11/U.S. 129. This last section has very sharp curves. |
TERMINI GALLERY
Southern
Terminus: U.S. 41/S.R. 3 (Northside Drive) in Atlanta
S.R. 9 ends at Northside Drive (U.S. 41) in Atlanta, while S.R. 3 takes care of U.S. 19 the rest of the way to Florida. This was not the original terminus of S.R. 9, however, which once ended in the heart of Atlanta. Photo taken May 16, 2005.
This assembly suggests S.R. 9 follows Hemphill Avenue, but this is merely a shortcut a few feet to the actual route of 14th St. Hemphill Avenue was historically S.R. 3E, which S.R. 9 historically ended into further south. Photo taken May 16, 2005.
This is the first northbound reassurance shield for S.R. 9 on eastbound 14th St. S.R. 9 passes by some of the tallest buildings in Atlanta where it turns north on West Peachtree St. Photo taken May 16, 2005. |
This junction assembly on northbound Northside Drive (U.S. 41/S.R. 3) is very misleading, suggesting either the routes are turning or you haven't gotten to them yet. You are on U.S. 19, but junctioning S.R. 9. Photo taken May 16, 2005. |
Northern Terminus: U.S. 129/S.R. 11 in the Turners Corner community north of Dahlonega
This junction assembly is the only evidence of S.R. 9 on U.S. 19/129 southbound, and it did not exist until recently. Like the southern terminus of S.R. 9, U.S. 19 is overlapping it and the junction assembly is misleading. Photo taken May 28, 2007.
Prior to the installation of the assembly above, only U.S. 19 was shown on the assembly. S.R. 11 is not shown here, either. You are seeing all of Turners Corner here looking southbound on U.S. 129. Photo taken April 16, 2005. |
The first southbound reassurance shield is a far more scenic scene than the northbound one in Atlanta. This was formerly the first and only evidence of S.R. 9 at that intersection. Photo taken April 16, 2005.
