S.R. 9 Business is a highway in Dahlonega in Lumpkin County. It is completely co-signed with S.R. 52 Business along its length and extends east and west of the city following former S.R. 9/52 through the downtown over a distance of approximately 1.2 miles. Part of the highway overlaps for a very brief 0.1 mile with U.S. 19 Business and S.R. 60 Business creating a unique quadruplex of all business routes.
HISTORY
In 1993, a new by-pass was completed around Dahlonega that had originally started in 1990. This new by-pass included an extension of Pine Tree Road west along the backside of North Georgia College and State University to S.R. 9/52 west of the city. The by-pass previously constructed utilized a connection of Pine Tree Road to Wimpy Mill Road in order to provide a better alignment for U.S. 19/S.R. 60. When this final leg was completed from S.R. 60 west to S.R. 9, both S.R. 9 and 52 were relocated to the new highway. Since the former routes of both S.R. 9 and S.R. 52 were retained as state highways, the former routes became business routes.
The route of S.R. 9 Business/52 Business was actually only partially S.R. 9 originally, but was fully S.R. 52. S.R. 9 ran west of current U.S. 19 Business, but turned north along U.S. 19/S.R. 60 before it was relocated. However, S.R. 9 Business did not exactly follow all of former S.R. 9, and was relocated along all of former S.R. 52 when the business route was created.

One sign assembly marks the very short overlap of all four business routes in downtown Dahlonega. |

Georgia's state overlaps of U.S. routes results in both new U.S. highways and downgrades of U.S. highways to state level quite often. These are of course in error, such as this U.S. 9 shield here. Another is found on S.R. 5 Business in Canton. |

This assembly is posted on S.R. 9/52 eastbound with the newer by-pass extending straight ahead. It includes patched over signs that apparently were formerly used on S.R. 15. Photo taken December 12, 2004.

The western end of S.R 9/52 Business is a very amusing sign error that resulted from the confusion with the overlapping U.S. 19 Business, with this posted instead of END S.R. 9/52 Business. This sign has been here since 1993! Photo taken December 12, 2004.

Here, the northern terminus signage is posted well ahead of the approaching by-pass including U.S. 19 and S.R. 60. Note that this end is signed correctly. Also note the patched over numbers that indicated a former usage.

Guide signs are used in the junction assembly on the eastern terminus junction assembly same as the western terminus. However, both of these are only posted in the directions where people are likely to use the business route. |
