Georgia Road Photos - Special Feature

The Historic Bridges of Bartow County - Bethany Bridge over Lake Allatoona near Emerson

Click on photo to view a larger image. Photo here is a close-up shot of the truss span with detail of the bridge rail on the approach. The bridge is quite narrow as well.

Bethany Bridge here is the only concrete bridge featured in the gallery, but is significant because it is a 1950 truss span whose design and scenery has been significant enough that it has even been featured in car commercials.

The bridge is located on Red Top Mountain Road near Emerson and is easily accessable from I-75. The bridge crosses a part of Allatoona Lake that forms the backflow for Allatoona Creek. The eastern approach of the bridge enters Red Top Mountain State Park, and the western approach forms a causeway before crossing the bridge itself.

Looking east directly at the approach to the bridge. Note the lack of adequate guardrails in the approach. I was standing in the middle of the road for this shot, which was not easy considering that this is a relatively busy highway.
Here is a side view of the span looking southeast from the west bank of the lake.
Another side view, this time looking southwest from the east bank, which is also a boat ramp in the park. Note the Allatoona Mountains in the background, which provide a very scenic backdrop for the bridge.
A close-up of the truss in the same view.
Here is a shot of the bridge approach with the date the bridge was constructed: 1950.
This shot shows the underside of the bridge close-up. GDOT would say this bridge was "overbuilt" when referring to the solid concrete piers underneath.
